Ego maturity refers to how we make meaning of the world. Ego maturity evolves over time, from childhood into adulthood. We are all quite familiar with the different stages of child development – the ‘terrible twos’ and then our growing awareness that the world doesn’t revolve around us and that cooperation and sharing are the norms we’re should operate by.

As we grow, we learn different ways of making meaning. Adults can also mature throughout their lives and make meaning in ever more integrated and flexible ways.

There are 12 different levels of ego maturity, split into six person perspectives (as shown in the diagram). The Complete Leadership Maturity Profile assesses what level you’re at. Even though more sophisticated levels of maturity are possible most adults do not mature much after reaching adulthood. Most leaders in organisations continue to make meaning at a conventional 3.0 or 3.5 stage. However, everyone can develop new ways of looking at life, experimenting with novel behaviours and becoming more resilient and effective as a leader.

Understanding Leadership Maturity

The Complete Leadership Maturity Profile was built in collaboration with the world’s leading expert in adult development, Susanne Cooke-Greuter. It is based on Susanne’s original questions and sentence completion methodology and also draws on the academic research of Jane Loevinger, Bill Torbert, Robert Kegan and Ken Wilber.

Methodology

Our approach to creating a transformational culture

The Complete Leadership Maturity Profile is a 42-sentence completion online assessment. You are given the beginning of a sentence and can put in anything you like to finish the sentence. For example, the sentence might start ‘If I can’t get what I want, I …’ Your sentence completion is then scored and examined in three different ways:

1. The sentence completions are compared to standard response and assigned a stage score.

2. The distribution undergoes multiple statistical analysis to generate a preliminary score.

3. A highly trained, experienced and certified scorer evaluates the responses as they relate to each other and assesses the profile as a whole.

Our scorers have gone through 16 months of intensive training with practice and a final exam to be certified. Your results are also benchmarked against two other populations – one general public and one of professionals who are leaders. The results of your Complete Maturity Profile assessment are provided in a detailed 20-page report. An experienced Complete consultant will explain your results to you. The assessment takes around 45 minutes to an hour to complete. It doesn’t require any preparation and it’s a good idea not to overthink your responses. It should be as real and genuine as possible.
