‘Alan came along to our Mountain Rescue Conference in September last year. My colleague and I have long been advocates of the benefits of coherent breathing – and the link with HRV – in improving health, wellbeing and thinking. It was a topic we were keen to promote to mountain rescue team members who, by the nature of the work, need to be at their best in terms of fitness and clarity of thought. Many in the audience were medical professionals, and the majority were casualty care/first aid trained. Mountain rescue is all about working in harsh environments, in timely manner, to find and treat injured hillgoers, so responders need to be at their best! So we were delighted that he was able to come along and share these ideas.
He talked to us at length before the event, to establish what we were looking for and how these ideas might best be shared with what I can only describe as a ‘determinedly sceptical audience’. He assured us that he had heard and dealt with any challenges they could possibly throw at him, however mischievous, and this proved to be the case.
On the day, Alan talked us through the concept and used a willing volunteer for Complete’s classic demonstration of how heart rate and HRV are affected under pressure. He answered questions and there was very positive feedback both during the weekend and afterwards. That said, as we rather expected, there were a few questions raised – after the event – and both Alans were very generous with their time in answering those queries, offering feedback and providing relevant references, for an article I subsequently wrote for Mountain Rescue magazine. Alan also shared this on Complete’s Linkedin page.’
