Navigating change in the new year

A senior executive in one of their Coaching conversations with us recently said that they were really looking forward to 2025. 2024 has been a very tough year for them, both professionally and personally, full of change – new role, new team – and personal challenges too. They would readily admit that it has been a struggle, that the amount of change has been overwhelming at times and that they had to fight the urge to hide away from everything and everyone.

There’s nothing unique about this story. You might even recognise elements of it in your own life. You might also be hoping that 2025 brings a period of calm or even change to your life.

There is something about new year that can bring a feeling of hope, but we can put too much faith in the power of a date change. We’ve been working with this executive to help them build their personal resilience so that they can view change differently, so that they don’t have to put so much faith in a date change.

We’re helping them build their faith in themself. Is this something you too are considering as we enter 2025?

Navigating change

We’re coaching this senior executive to help them navigate change more effectively; to see change not as something to endure, but something to be embraced.

I appreciate that might sound like a big jump but let me explain.

There are four distinct phases to change and, within those phases, 12 steps. Understanding the process of change removes some of the mystery and the feeling of chaos that often comes with it. By understanding that its part of a cycle of events it helps us see and navigate things more positively. It’s something we teach in many of our coaching programmes. When we’re able to see change for what it really is, we can become much more skilful at moving through that change process gracefully and productively.

What you need is a map to navigate those 12 steps in the change wheel and, ideally, a good coach to help you prepare you for the transitions between moments of change. But the right coach will help you understand where you are on the change wheel now and how best to work through each step change cycle – maybe you’re in your comfort zone, stuck in a rut or convinced that you’re right and everyone else is wrong.

Having the right map is one thing, but a successful transition requires support. This is not something you should have to do alone – especially if you’re facing significant change. Such change could be major team changes at work, a new job role or even a board shake up.

The reason  why you need to find the right coach to help you navigate the changes you are facing works is because they understand not only the change journey but the internal resources you need to navigate the change. That means a deep and knowledgeable understanding of how our energy levels impact our ability to manage change and how our emotional management is fundamental to having enough energy for change.

This is deeper work. It gets to the core of who we are as human beings and subsequently what drives us and our organisations. When you take a more fundamental approach you make changes that last. This deeper work may be challenging, but it’s precisely what unlocks new levels of potential and performance.

All leaders, at every level but especially in the c-suite, can benefit from coaching programmes that focus on navigating change.
